What Is Lemon Law?
Lemon laws protect car buyers when a new (or sometimes used) vehicle has serious, recurring problems that the dealer can’t fix. Each state’s law is different, but the basics are similar: if your car is always in the shop for the same issue, you may have rights.
Do You Have a Lemon?
- Has your car had 3 or more repairs for the same problem?
- Is the issue covered by warranty?
- Has the car been out of service for 30+ days total?
- Did the problem start within the first 1–2 years of ownership?
What to Document
- Service records and repair orders
- Dates and mileage for every repair attempt
- All correspondence with the dealer/manufacturer
- Warranty and purchase documents
Practical Checklist
- Keep a repair log (dates, issues, outcomes)
- Save all receipts and written communications
- Take photos/videos of the problem
- Ask for written confirmation of each repair attempt
Next Steps If You Suspect a Lemon
- Notify the manufacturer in writing
- Request a final repair attempt
- Consult a consumer law attorney for your options
