Bankruptcy

When Does the 60-Day Objection Period Start in Chapter 7?

Below is a clean timeline you can format visually for social media or your website.

📅 Chapter 7 Objection Timeline

📌 Day 0 – Bankruptcy Filed

  • Automatic stay begins.
  • Creditors receive notice.

📌 3–5 Weeks After Filing – 341 Meeting

  • Meeting of creditors is held.
  • Trustee questions debtor.
  • Creditors may attend (most do not).

📌 60 Days After the First Scheduled 341 Date

⚠️ Deadline to File Objections

Creditors must file:

  • Objection to Dischargeability (§ 523)
  • Objection to Discharge (§ 727)

If no objection is filed by this deadline:
✔ Most discharge challenges are permanently barred.

📌 After Deadline Passes

  • Case moves toward discharge.
  • Court enters discharge order (usually shortly thereafter).
  • Debts are legally eliminated (subject to statutory exceptions).

⚖️ Why the 60-Day Deadline Matters

If a creditor misses it:

  • They cannot later claim fraud (with very limited exceptions).
  • They lose leverage to challenge dischargeability.
  • The debt is wiped out.

The 60-day window is strict.
